The cliff is real, but so is the freeze at its edge. You may be leaping without looking, or looking so long the day goes by. Either way the invitation has not expired. Slow the step until you can feel the path under it, then take it — a smaller leap is still a beginning.

History

Waite numbered the Fool 0, a wanderer outside the numbered sequence, standing at a sunlit precipice. Pamela Colman Smith gave him a white rose of intent, a knapsack of untried tools, and a small white dog at his heels — companion and warning both. In older Marseille decks Le Mat was often unnumbered, a beggar-jester; Waite and Smith made him a soul on the first morning of the journey.
