Waite moved Strength to VIII (Marseille keeps it at XI) so it would sit with Leo in his esoteric sequence. Smith painted a woman in white closing a lion’s mouth as if greeting a large cat, the lemniscate floating above her like the Magician’s. Flowers crown her and girdle the lion. Fortitude, in this deck, is tenderness with a spine.
