Major Arcana · 11 · The Scale
Justice
Upright
fairness · cause and effect · clear seeing
The books want balancing: this is not punishment but the relief of an honest account — what you did, what it grew, what is owed, what can be set right. Tell the truth without theatre; fairness includes you. Cut cleanly, then live with the room that makes.
Reversed
imbalance · harsh self-verdict · avoiding the scales
You may be dodging a consequence, or sitting as judge over your own life with a blade too heavy. Put the sword down long enough to weigh the actual facts. Repair is more just than exile. If the world has been unfair, name that too — Justice is not a demand that you absorb every blow.
On the card
Scales
Weigh the actual facts. Mercy is a partner, not a leak.
Upright sword
A clean cut. Discrimination without theatre.
Pillars
A court with structure. Fairness needs a room, not a mood.
Square crown
Ordered thought. The head is doing its job.
When it shows up
This looks like paying what you owe, asking for what you are owed, or telling the story without the extra villain.
History
Waite placed Justice at XI (Marseille’s VIII) to correspond with Libra. Smith’s figure sits between pillars with upright sword and golden scales, a small veil behind, a square crown of ordered thought. The sword is discrimination; the scales are mercy’s partner. In this deck, justice is a practiced seeing, not a mood.
If you want to sit with it
What is the honest account — including the part that is fair to you?
