Major Arcana · 14 · The Mix
Temperance
Upright
right measure · patient blending · living middle
You are learning the proportions that actually work for this season of your life. Not the ideal balance someone else prescribed — the one that lets you stay upright and kind. Pour slowly. Taste as you go. Adjust.
Reversed
imbalance · forcing the mix · all-or-nothing
You may be swinging between extremes or trying to force a harmony that is not yet ready. Temperance reversed often asks for less effort and more honest tasting. What is actually sustainable right now, even if it looks imperfect?
On the card
The two cups
What is being combined. Neither is discarded; both are needed.
One foot on land, one in water
Belonging to both the practical and the felt.
The path and the crown
A distant light. The work is slow, but it is going somewhere.
When it shows up
This looks like rebuilding a daily rhythm after upheaval, learning a new balance between work and rest, or finding the middle path between two strong pulls.
History
Smith’s angel pours water between two cups, one foot on earth and one in a pool, a fire triangle in a square on the breast. Irises bloom at the waterline — Iris, the messenger — and a path leads to a crown of sun between mountains. Waite’s Temperance is alchemy you can cook with; Golden Dawn assigned it Sagittarius, the long, aimed pour.
If you want to sit with it
What two things in your life are asking to be mixed more carefully right now?
Optional. Nothing is saved.
