Name the thing that has been running you. It does not have to be dramatic. Often it is ordinary: the scroll, the story about your worth, the relationship pattern that keeps costing you. Seeing it clearly is already the beginning of freedom. The chain was never locked from the outside.

loosening · denial · or the first real step out

You may be beginning to unhook, or you may be pretending the chain is not there. Both are possible. If the grip is loosening, move carefully and keep the new space honest. If you are still denying, the card simply asks you to look again without shame.

History

After Éliphas Lévi’s Baphomet, Waite’s Devil is goat-horned and bat-winged, an inverted pentagram at the brow, torch down, seated on a black cube. Two figures stand chained — and Smith drew the loops large enough to slip. Grapes and a flame tip their tails: appetite, not damnation. Waite’s point is bondage by consent, which means consent can be withdrawn.
