Major Arcana · 16 · The Break
The Tower
Upright
rupture · sudden truth · the structure that had to fall
A structure built on a lie — a job, a story, a peace that was only silence — is coming down, and it will feel like weather you did not order. After the dust there is more sky than there was, so tell the truth while the bricks are still in the air; it hurts less than rebuilding the same tower. You are not being ruined: you are being unhoused from what could not hold.
Reversed
delayed collapse · denying the crack · a gentler dismantling
You can hear the plaster ticking. Pretending the crack is a feature only makes the fall meaner. If you can, take the house apart with your own hands — one honest conversation, one resignation, one wall you stop decorating. A chosen dismantling is still a Tower, but you get to salvage the furniture.
On the card
Lightning
A truth that will not wait. Revelation with the roof off.
Falling crown
A false sovereignty knocked free. The title was the problem.
Two figures
No one is exempt from the drop. Better to fall than to burn inside.
Twenty-two flames
The whole journey, loosed. Even the majors come down sometimes.
When it shows up
This looks like the resignation, the diagnosis of a lie, the night the silence broke, or taking the wall apart yourself.
History
Lightning from a sun-bolt strikes a crowned tower; the crown is knocked free; two figures fall. Smith scattered twenty-two yods of flame — one for each major — against a black sky. This is the Marseille Maison Dieu recast: the House of God, meaning the false sanctuary. Waite’s disaster is revelation with the roof off.
If you want to sit with it
What structure is already ticking — and what could you salvage if you stopped decorating the crack?
Optional. Nothing is saved.
