Major Arcana · 17 · The Well
The Star
Upright
hope · replenishment · quiet faith
After weather, water: this is the card that kneels and pours back into the ground. Healing is already underway — not as a speech, as a practice of returning to what is simple and true. Let yourself be helped; the night is still a night, but it has a star you can steer by, and that is enough to walk.
Reversed
dimmed hope · trouble receiving · forgetting the well
The well is there and you keep walking past it, or you have mistaken hope for a feeling you must manufacture. Receive a little: one honest rest, one glass of water, one person told the truth. The Star reversed is rarely absence of light; it is a difficulty in letting the light land.
On the card
Eight-pointed star
A light you did not invent. Steering, not spectacle.
Two jugs
One for the pool, one for the soil. Give back to both worlds.
Nakedness
Nothing left to impress. Healing without costume.
When it shows up
This looks like drinking water, asking for help, going back to the simple practice, or letting a small hope be enough.
History
Smith’s naked woman kneels with one foot on land and one on water, emptying two jugs — one onto soil, one into a pool. A great eight-pointed star hangs above seven smaller ones; an ibis perches in a tree. After the Tower, Waite gives Aquarius: the water-bearer restoring the earth. Hope, in this image, is a body doing the pouring.
If you want to sit with it
Where have you been walking past the well?
Optional. Nothing is saved.
