The craft

10 · The Gate

Ten of Pentacles

This stage

An elder, a child, loyalty at the door. Time in both directions. Ordinary love as architecture. The table that holds three generations.

How we got here

The Nine was yours. The Ten is what outlives a mood.

Where this leads

After the household, the suit becomes people. The Page is a student of the real.

Upright

legacy · household wealth · belonging across years

An old man, a couple, a child, dogs, an archway, ten pentacles arranged as the Tree of Life. This is the suit’s completion: family, property, a name that has somewhere to sit. Receive your people and build something that can be handed on without bitterness; belonging is a kind of wealth the ledger cannot quite hold.

Reversed

inheritance as burden · family money trouble · a house that is not a home

The gate is gold and the kitchen is cold, or an inheritance is running the living. Ten reversed asks what the house is for. Repair the bond or release the building. Earth at its fullest still needs the other suits — feeling, truth, and a little fire — or it is only an estate.

On the card

  • The gate

A household threshold. Lineage, chosen or blood.

  • The elder and the child

Time in both directions. What you build outlives a mood.

  • The dogs

Loyalty at the door. Ordinary love as architecture.

When it shows up

This looks like the will, the family business, the house key you hand over, the table that holds three generations.

History

Smith filled a gateway with three generations, two dogs, and ten pentacles in the pattern of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. Waite’s Ten is family and established wealth. Earth as lineage. The old man in the furred robe is often read as the Magician or Hierophant grown into ancestry — work that outlives the worker.

If you want to sit with it

What are you building that someone else might still stand in?

Optional. Nothing is saved.

The gate is standing. Now be a beginner of matter again, if you need to.
