Nine of Wands

Upright

last watch · persistence · a boundary after battle

You are tired and still standing, a palisade of old efforts at your back. This is earned wariness, not cynicism, so rest against the staff without dropping it. The fight is mostly over; the work is to stay upright until the body believes you have already done enough to deserve the pause.

Reversed

exhaustion · expecting attack · a wall that became a cage

The bandage has become an identity, or every approaching figure looks like the last fight. Take a proper night. If the wall is keeping out help as well as harm, pull two stakes. Nine reversed asks whether vigilance is still serving the garden.

On the card

  • The bandage

You have already been in it. Rest is part of the watch.

  • Fence of wands

A boundary made of old fights. Useful, if it does not become a cage.

  • The glance back

Vigilance. Not every sound is an enemy.

When it shows up

This looks like the last push before leave, the tired guard, the wisdom of not dropping the staff yet.

History

A wounded man in a bandage leans on one staff; eight more stand behind him as a fence. Smith’s look is wary but not beaten, and Waite spoke of strength in reserve. Fire, at nine, is endurance — the body that kept the watch, still in the suit’s dry hills.

If you want to sit with it

What would a watchful rest look like — not quitting, just sitting with the fence?

Optional. Nothing is saved.
