K · The Wide Cup

King of Cups

This stage

Emotion that can govern. Calm in deep water. Maturity, not numbness. A will that includes the heart.

How we got here

The Queen kept the depth. The King makes sure the feeling can run a week of real life.

Where this leads

The last cup is only last until the Ace is offered again. Drink, then wash the vessel.

Upright

emotional authority · calm counsel · a harbor

A king with a fish on his throne holds a cup as if it were a small sea he understands. This is mature feeling — counsel, loyalty, the ability to sit with someone else’s storm without becoming it. Be the harbor. Let the ships come and go without taking on all their water.

Reversed

cold control of feeling · manipulation · a harbor that became a lock

The fish has frozen, or the harbor charges a toll in guilt. Warm the throne. King of Cups reversed is often a man (or a habit) who uses calm as a lid. Feeling named plainly is more royal than feeling managed.

On the card

  • The wide cup

Feeling with authority. Emotion that can govern.

  • The sea-throne

Calm in deep water. Maturity, not numbness.

  • The scepter

A will that includes the heart. Not one or the other.

When it shows up

This looks like holding the family through a hard week, leading without going cold, a feeling you can trust.

History

Smith’s King holds a short scepter and a cup; a fish leaps from the water beside a ship; his throne sits on a gray sea. Waite’s Kings are the outer, airy mastery of their suit — here, emotion governed without being banished. The fish necklace and side-fish are water’s emblem: he is of the element he rules.

If you want to sit with it

Where is your emotional authority needed — without becoming a dam?

Optional. Nothing is saved.

The household

You have walked the water once.

A cup is not a verdict. It is a vessel. You can empty it. You can fill it. You can leave it on the table for someone else.

The Ace is still being offered, whenever you are thirsty enough to notice.
