Seven of Cups

This stage

Seven vessels in fog. Not all of them are drinkable. A vision needs a table. Which one would still matter on the ground?

How we got here

The Six was a simple gift. The Seven is too many almosts.

Where this leads

When you pick the real cup, you may have to leave the rest. The Eight is the night walk.

Upright

vision · choices of the heart · wish-work

Seven cups in a cloud, each with a different wish — castle, jewels, a wreath, a dragon, a serpent, a shrouded figure, a glowing face. Imagination is working overtime. That is a gift if you will pick one cup and bring it to the table. Dream, then decide.

Reversed

coming down from the cloud · choosing one cup · illusion named

The cloud is thinning, or you are drowning in options that were never all yours. Name the fantasy without marrying it. Seven reversed is often a useful disillusion: fewer cups, a realer thirst. Choose the one you can actually wash.

On the card

  • Seven vessels

Choices, fantasies, fog. Not all of them are drinkable.

  • The cloud

Desire without ground. A vision needs a table.

  • Hidden figures

Some cups hold a face, a snake, a wreath. Look before you sip.

When it shows up

This looks like too many tabs, too many almost-loves, the daydream that is stalling the one real cup.

History

A silhouette faces a cloud of seven chalices, each containing a vision Waite listed as the soul’s temptations and gifts. Smith’s images — castle, jewels, laurel, dragon, snake, veiled figure, radiant head — are among her most famous minor inventions. Water here is fantasy, the suit at its most aerial and least embodied.

If you want to sit with it

Which vision would still matter if the cloud put it on the ground?

Optional. Nothing is saved.

Choose, or keep walking past. The next door is a leaving.
