The edge
3 · The Wound
Three of Swords
This stage
A heart, three blades, rain. A real hurt. Naming it is part of healing. Do not turn it into a story about your worth.
How we got here
The Two would not look. The Three is the sentence you cannot unread.
Where this leads
After the wound, the body needs a tomb that is rest, not death. The Four is the nap.
Upright
heartbreak · necessary sorrow · a truth that names the hurt
Three swords through a heart, rain on a gray sky. Something true has arrived that hurts, so let it: naming the wound is not the same as living in it. Cry if the weather wants that, then keep the heart — it is still a working heart, and sorrow that is told the truth begins to drain.
Reversed
first knitting · lingering in the rain · refusing the grief
The rain may be lightening, or you are picking at a puncture that wants a bandage. Three reversed is healing underway — do not rip it open for a better story. If you have not yet admitted the weather, admit it. Grief postponed becomes climate.
On the card
The heart
A real hurt. Do not spiritualize it away.
Three swords
Words, news, a triangle of pain. Naming it is part of healing.
The rain
Weather that matches the inside. Grief allowed a sky.
When it shows up
This looks like the diagnosis, the betrayal, the sentence you cannot unread.
History
Smith’s image is among the deck’s most famous: a red heart pierced by three swords against a downpour. Waite’s keywords were absence, delay, and tears. Air here becomes weather that the body has to feel. There is no figure — only the fact of hurt, which is its own kind of honesty.
If you want to sit with it
What hurt wants to be told the truth, without being turned into a story about your worth?
Optional. Nothing is saved.
Tell the truth of it. Then put the swords on the wall until morning.
